A graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in pre-professional studies, Dr. Cabrera earned his MD from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in St. Maarten. When he’s not at the hospital, he enjoys engaging with visitors at Lavender Waves Farm, sharing his love for the farm and its unique embrace of nature. Among the farm’s biggest attractions are its rare camels, a favorite among families and children. The camels at Lavender Waves belong to two distinct breeds: the Dromedary, or Arabian camel, known for its single hump, and the less common Bactrian camel, distinguished by its two humps and native to the cold climates of Asia. Despite the Bactrian camel’s declining numbers in the wild, Lavender Waves Farm is proud to house three of the five privately-owned Bactrian camels in Rhode Island, alongside two Dromedaries named Jack and Bingham.
In addition to the camels, chickens play a crucial role in the farm’s ecosystem, naturally managing pests without the need for chemicals, underscoring Dr. Cabrera’s commitment to sustainability. “We have the only two dromedary camels in Rhode Island named Jack and Bingham,” Dr. Cabrera shares. “Jack is the brown one, and Bingham is the white one. They’re about 15 years old and were raised together, and we acquired them in March 2023. Humphrey is our gorgeous 3-year-old Bactrian camel. We’ve had him since he was 5.5 months old. We acquired him from a breeder in Michigan. The dromedaries came from a private individual in Wisconsin. These giant animals are a spectacular addition to any event as they mesmerize guests with their incredible size.”
